Short Overview of Differentiated Services

چکیده

While Integrated Services provides per-flow guarantees, Differentiated Services (DiffServ) [1] follows the philosophy of mapping multiple flows into a few service levels—an approach sometimes referred to as Class of Service (CoS). DiffServ does not define any signaling mechanisms, but instead, packets are marked with a DiffServ Code Point (DSCP), which provides information about the QoS requested for a packet. The code point enables network routers to handle IP packets differently depending on the code point and hence their relative priority. DiffServ code points are located in the 8-bit Type of Service (TOS) field in the IP header. The TOS field used to define a specific forwarding treatment, which a packet could request from the network, for example, low delay, high reliability, or low cost. The old definition has been deprecated and DiffServ has adopted a new one for packet classification. The TOS field has been divided into a new 6bit DiffServ field and a 2-bit unused field. Each DiffServ code point (DSCP) is encoded into the low order six bits. The unused field is being allocated to the Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) mechanisms [7]. Differentiated services can be constructed by a combination of: (i) marking packets with a DSCP at boundary nodes, (ii) using the DSCP or a multifield classification to determine how packets are forwarded by the nodes inside the domain, and (iii) conditioning the marked packets at boundary nodes.

Core Node Implementation for Differentiated Services

This paper provides an overview of an implementation of Differentiated Services interior node (a.k.a. core node) as described in the SIMA concept. The core node operation was verified with a series of measurements in a real networking environment. These measurements also give some idea about the level of Quality of Service this kind of mechanism is able to provide.

ACCOUNTING IN QoS -ENABLED IP NETWORKS

This paper presents an overview of the advanced transport-based accounting management in IP networks with differentiated services (DiffServ). We first provide a survey and taxonomy of accounting management functions, including metering, pricing, charging, billing, payment and information provisioning. An overview of pricing models for DiffServ networks has been presented. We also consider IETF ...

Internet network design for quality of service guarantee using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)

By developing the new services such as VoIP and Videoconference, using a mechanism is needed to support the quality of service of the application programs. Different models have been presented to guarantee the quality of service. Among these, the differentiated services can be mentioned which was presented by IETF. In the architecture of the differentiated services, no admission control mechani...

Differentiated Services: A New Approach for Quality of Service in the Internet

With the grown popularity of the Internet and the increasing use of business and multimedia applications the users’ demand for higher and more predictable quality of service has risen. A first improvement to offer better than best-effort services was made by the development of the integrated services architecture and the RSVP protocol. But this approach proved only suitable for smaller IP netwo...
